How DO They Do That?!

For my first musing, and in order to start a little feedback, I'm asking all you mommies a question: HOW ON EARTH DO YOU MANAGE?

I've seen moms get up at 3 AM, breastfeed the baby, start breakfast, clean the kitchen, get the kids ready for school, do laundry, go to work, go shopping, come home, make dinner, help with homework, do Bible study, put the kids to bed, go to the gym, do bills, clean the kitchen AGAIN, iron, and not get to sleep until midnight.

Ladies, please tell me the secret! How do you manage to live on so little sleep? I've been struggling with lack of sleep for the past 10 days and I'm running on fumes. So go ahead, comment away, and tell me what I'm doing wrong and how I can learn to do it, too!

  1. Well, you haven't seen many women who go on such little sleep that many days in a row and survive. One thing you have to keep in mind is that you have to take care of yourself (health) before you can take care of others properly. When I went through the initial sleep deprivation stage after having Hampton, I thought I would lose my mind. Remember it's only temporary. If it ceases to become temporary, you need to see a doctor and get help. You can't go on little sleep forever.

On the cooking topic, I recommend 2 books (assuming they're still in print) that I received when I got married. One is called _Quick & Delicious_ (ISBN 0-89577-491-7) and the Better Homes & Gardens New Cook Book (red plaid book). I have loved these books! The BHG one has simple things in it - like how to bake potatoes, cook corn on the cob, and it has instructional sections on different cuts of meat (and how to cook), tips on baking, spice & herb use, etc. It's a good "how-to" book, not just a recipe book.

  2. Thanks for commenting! I actually don't know why I'm not sleeping. I've taken melatonin (which usually works) and even Benadryl (Which ALWAYS works). I fall asleep at 9 pm, and I'm wide awake by 1. My body's exhausted, but I just can't seem to get my mind to shut down. Even prayer isn't working.

I'll have to check out the cookbooks. Lord knows I need all the help I can get. Part of me is jealous of my husband's natural talent in the kitchen. :)

  3. It is not a question of "How" rather it is an answer of why. When you take on another responsibility, you just learn to adjust. It takes time for your body to adjust to the care that is needed for another responsibility. It just doesn't happen overnite. There is a lot of wear and tear and making mistakes, or forgetting things that happen as well. When I became a mother (a single one at that) I didn't go to the bookstore to find the book of how to raise my child and become the supermom that I had heard of. There are no books to tell you how to do everything. Even the books that are out there only give guidelines. You learn from doing. And sooner or later, you learn to adjust. The sleep? Well, you get sleep, just not the sleep that you once had before becoming the parent. Nor do you have the life that you had before, either.
    You just adjust....
